Frequently Asked Questions
What if I have anxiety/ depression/ high blood pressure/ diabetes/ cholesterol/ thyroid/ heart conditions; can I still take medication to help me lose weight?
We see a wide range of medical conditions including the ones listed above. Each patient is required to meet with our Certified Physician Assistant as part of the initial consultation and on an as needed basis to review your unique medical history including any conditions and current medications you may be taking. If phentermine is not right for you, there may be other alternatives to help you with weight management.
What medications do you use?
At Naperville Weightloss Center, we primarily use FDA-approved Phentermine. This is a prescription appetite-suppressant medication that has been used for over fifty years. Our Certified Physician Assistant is also well trained in other, effective FDA-approved medications for alternative options. We also offer Vitamin B-12 injections and Lipotropic supplements to enhance additional weight loss.
Can I take phentermine while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Phentermine is a category X medication and risks outweigh potential benefits. It is unknown if phentermine is excreted in breast milk and therefore is contraindicated and should not be taken if nursing. Injections will not be offered either for patients who are pregnant or nursing.
How much weight should I expect to lose?
The exact amount of weight loss it variable. It depends on lifestyle modifications including diet and exercise, initial BMI, certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, and certain medications you may be taking. However, research has shown that treatment with phentermine is statistically significant in body weight reduction compared to placebo. After 12 weeks of treatment, average weight loss was 17.5 +/- 16.1 lbs. among patients taking phentermine versus 2.0 +/- 12.9 lbs. with placebo. In patients who took phentermine, 73.6% of patients lost 5% or more of their initial body weight in contrast to 15.1% with placebo. Korean J Obes. 2005 Sep;14(3):155-162. Korean.
How long is the first appointment?
The first visit usually lasts about 45 minutes where all required testing will be conducted followed by the consultation. After that, visits are brief, usually just 15 minutes depending on patient’s requirements and degree of success.
How often can I be seen?
We highly encourage patients to be consistently seen every 4 weeks to see the provider for any questions and/or to refill your prescription. Optional weekly visits for B-12 injections or every 2 week visits for the Lipo-B injection are recommended. You DO NOT need an appointment for follow-up visits.
